Tennessee Moon aims to beat boys in Bosselman Pump and Pantry/Gus Fonner Stakes
When a mare has proved ultimate superiority against her peers, the obvious next step is to find out if she’s faster than the colts.
5-year-old mare Tennessee Moon has toyed with the distaff divisions across the plains for over a year. Now it’s time for a new challenge: the mile-and-a-sixteenth $75,000 Bosselman Pump and Pantry/Gus Fonner Stakes.
Tennessee Moon is listed as the 9-2 third choice after winning the most races by any thoroughbred in the United States or Canada in 2024. So far in 2025, she’s won the Bold Accent Stakes and the Springtime Tradition Stakes for sprinting mares at Fonner Park. Jockey David Cardoso retains the mount for owner/trainer Mark Hibdon.
To prepare for the Bosselman Pump and Pantry/Gus Fonner Stakes, she was entered in a six furlong open allowance on April 13, but was scratched after flipping in the gate.
Among the races she won in 2024 was the $21,750 Jack Greer Memorial Stakes in June at Energy Downs 307 in Wyoming. She beat six male rivals when winning the mile contest by three-quarters of a length.
The Bosselman Pump and Pantry/Gus Fonner Stakes has a much stronger group of colts than the Jack Greer Memorial Stakes.
The morning-line favorite is Komorebino Omoide (JPN). Winless on the year, he’s twice been second at the Fair Grounds in the Louisiana Stakes (G3) and the Mineshaft (G3). He was last seen finishing fifth and last in the New Orleans Classic Stakes (G2).
The Bosselman Pump and Pantry/Gus Fonner is a massive class drop for Komorebino Omoide (JPN) who was beaten by Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Hit Show in the Louisiana (G3) and finished behind defending Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Sierra Leone in the New Orleans Classic (G2).
2025 Dowd Mile Stakes winner Arthurian is the morning-line second choice. Breaking from the outside gate is 2024 Butch Gleason Classic winner Subsidize, who was third in the Dowd Mile.
Post-time for the Bosselman Pump and Pantry/Gus Fonner is 5:40 p.m. CT on April 26. Tennessee Moon will break from gate 4.
The Elite Sprint Cup for 3-year-olds-and-up and the Fonner Park Special Stakes for Nebraska-bred 3-year-old colts-and-geldings will also be run on April 26.
5-year-old Nebraska-bred gelding Mo Summer is the 5-2 favorite for the Elite Sprint Cup, after winning the April 13 allowance Tennessee Moon scratched from. P R Mo Vision is the 4-5 favorite for the Fonner Park Special.
